As your student probably told you, we announced at class yesterday that we are doing Little Mermaid Jr. this year. Their reaction was awesome, so I am incredibly pumped. The classes are going well and we have been surprised every week by the talent we have this year. I can't wait to watch them grow as we continue through classes and the production process.
The first week we learned some basics of theater: never face the back of the stage, project your voice, talk to the audience not just your fellow cast mates, etc. These things will continue to be taught over and over up until showtime. After learning a little, we put those practices to the test by handing out scripts of different Disney plays to groups of 7-10, and letting them organize and then perform their show. For the first day, they did a very good job and we had a great time. Last night we announced the show and the introduced them to the characters. They were able to choose a character they were interested in auditioning for and practice that role as the directors walked around to get an idea of how their personalities meshed with the roles. I won't lie, there were definitely some stand outs by the end of class yesterday! BUT things can change in an instant.
The next two classes are 10/5 and 10/30 after school until 5:00. We will break into groups by character and spend time working on auditions songs, and learning about different characters' personalities and how to best deliver those lines to portray that. On 10/30 we will be learning the audition dance. It will also be available online, but I can't tell you how much easier it will be for them to learn it in person.
Shortly I will be posting all of the audition material and in the coming days I will post the calendar on here as well. Can't wait to meet with them again on October 5!
